Mohari Hospitality prepares to open its first hotel in Toronto

Toronto, July 8 2021: Mohari Hospitality’s first hotel in Canada has been redeveloped as the luxury and sustainable 1 Hotel Toronto and is now accepting reservations for an August 4 2021 opening.

Mohari acquired the asset, located at 550 Wellington Street West, in 2017 and in 2019 announced it was partnering with SH Hotels & Resorts to transform and rebrand the hotel into a luxury and sustainable 1 Hotels retreat, the first of its kind in Canada. Renovations and design were led by award-winning architecture and design firm Rockwell Group under the oversight of David Rockwell.

Mohari Hospitality, through its substantial investment, completely renovated and re-imagined the property, which had been operating as the Thompson Toronto hotel.  The hotel was closed in January 2020 to allow renovations to begin and although the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily delayed the reopening of the hotel, the 1 Hotel Toronto is now accepting reservations and will open on August 4 2021. Located in the heart of Toronto’s King Street West neighbourhood, 1 Hotel Toronto features 112 guest rooms including 21 suites, offering city and iconic skyline views, and the hotel is also home to five different dining and entertainment concepts.  More information can found on the hotel’s website here and in the announcement from SH Hotels & Resorts here.

Mark Scheinberg, Founder of Mohari Hospitality said, “Having grown up in Toronto, I’ve watched the incredible regeneration that the city has experienced in recent years. By redeveloping one of Toronto’s hospitality and entertainment icons, Mohari is helping to transform the downtown area and provide an exciting hospitality destination that can be embraced by the local community. We’re delighted to have partnered with SH Hotels & Resorts to bring 1 Hotels, a leader in luxury sustainability, to Canada for the first time.”

Part of the local community

Whilst the hotel remained unopened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mohari Hospitality was able to provide support to the community with a grant from the Scheinberg Relief Fund (SRF), a $50M philanthropic fund established by Mark Scheinberg and his family. Mohari Hospitality, SH Hotels & Resorts’ and food rescue charity Second Harvest came together to help Torontonians at risk of going hungry during the pandemic. In December 2020 they launched the ‘1 Hotel Toronto Relief Kitchen’, using the empty hotel kitchen to prepare meals for the local community and provide employment and wages for hotel staff who were not working due to the pandemic.

The 1 Hotel Toronto Relief Kitchen prepared and delivered over 45,000 meals to nine agencies across Toronto, donated over 6,000 hours of staff time to the two largest local food banks and brought 36 members of the team back to work to serve their community.
